In some markets, the two-hour pilot of Star Trek: The Next Generation, 'Encounter At Farpoint' (1987), premiered on September 28, 1987, in direct competition, partly or fully with the ABC premiere of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). This happened because NFL players at the beginning of the 1987 NFL Season were on strike, meaning no Monday Night Football (1970), which, at the time, aired on ABC. To fill the void, ABC bumped up its premiere of Star Trek III by placing it in the timeslot usually reserved for Monday Night Football during the regular NFL season. That movie was to premiere on ABC later that year on a Sunday. So, the direct competition in some markets of the two Star Trek properties was unintentional. Coincidentally, Ernie Anderson, the legendary ABC announcer, did the promos for the first four Star Trek movies each time they aired on ABC during the 1980s and early 1990s, and also did the promos for Star Trek: The Next Generation during its first three and a half seasons.
