Despite some critics being sniffy at about the show, it also gained lots of praise for bringing then difficult subject matters (such as alcoholism, homelessness, homosexuality and AIDS, single mothers, racism, intolerance and poverty) to a family audience. These universal themes also helped to sell the show to many countries.
