"The Sentinel," the short story that formed the seed of the idea for the film "2001," concludes with the thought that the object was a sentinel that had been placed in anticipation of the day when human development would bring us to the point that we would be able to discover the item. Once we found it, it simply emitted a signal of unknown purpose. The story ends with the suggestion that humanity had tripped a fire alarm of sorts, indicating to the alien intelligence that had created the object that we were ready for the next stage in our evolution. Naturally, this would be interplanetary travel.From that point, at which time we discover the next object, which would indicate our readiness to go interstellar and meet the source of the monolith. The strange ending, in Bowman's living quarters, indicates that the level of development of the aliens was so advanced that the only way to interact with them was in the context of familiar objects and surroundings to which humans were able to relate. Not only were they four million years beyond us, but even back then their advancement was so great that they were able to travel between the stars and place the "sentinels";
