Ghostface cites their opportunity to kill Wes as a reference to the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's Psyco (1960). Psycho has been a major influence on much of the whodunnit slasher structure, much like the original Scream (1996) popularized the meta-focused and pop culture-influenced slasher subgenre. The scene even has the same shot from Psycho where the camera is directly underneath the shower as it turns on.
