The winning of the Best Cinematography Oscar has been attributed to the unique use of period color palette. The film was converted to a so-called digital intermediate - a process quite novel at the time - that could be color-graded digitally by means of using LUTs (3D Look Up Tables), also something new at the time. The LUTs for the two and three-strip palettes that are seen in the movie were designed by Joshua Pines, Research and Development Vice President of Technicolor Digital Intermediates.
