Several details in the movie are depictions of actual Swedish folk customs and old beliefs. The midsummer night was considered one of the most magical nights of the year in older Swedish culture; a night when magic and supernatural beings could more easily affect humans. Therefore, this night is connected to many different customs and traditions, originally intended to protect yourself, your family, livestock, etc from dark magic or to make use of the good magic. Picking flowers while walking backwards is a local variation on a very common midsummer tradition. You pick 7 (or 9) different kinds of flowers, while following specific rules. The rules can vary in different parts of the country. Having to walk backwards is a common rule, as is having to cross 7 fences and having to stay quiet during the whole procedure. The flowers are then placed under your pillow and during the night you supposedly dream about your future husband. Eating a heavily salted herring, starting from the tail, fills the same purpose as picking flowers. Herring in all shapes imaginable is also one of the traditional foods served during midsummer. Dancing around a decorated pole really is a big part of the midsummer celebration. In reality, the most widely used songs and dances are very simple and old children's music games.
