The film begins in 1995 with a young Natasha and Yelena playing, before going through a montage of their training in the Red Room during the opening credits and then saying "21 years later", as Natasha is on the run after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) which takes place in this year, previous to Avengers: Infinity War (2018) (not counting the in-between Doctor Strange (2016), Guardiani della Galassia Vol. 2 (2017), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Black Panther (2018) because Natasha is not implied on them).
