According to producer Sherwood Schwartz, the seven castaways were archetypes of the seven deadly sins. Gilligan- sloth, Skipper- wrath, Professor- pride, Mr. Howell- greed, Mrs. Howell- gluttony, Ginger- lust, Mary Ann- envy.
