In this film, Holmes goes into character as a Indian with a dark skin complexion, which would generally correspond to southern India. The northern Indian skin tones are generally relatively lighter. Although, in the 2020s, his "brownface" makeup may be considered inappropriate, even for the 1940s, Sherlock Holmes did actually play the persona as a very cultured, civilised individual who happened to be Indian, to draw out the criminals.
