When Julius Caesar and Cleopatra first enter Rome, heralds appear before them carrying fasces (a bundle of sticks with a protruding axe head). The fasces were historically used in Rome to symbolize power and unity. The appearance of the fasces here is notable, because the symbol had been at the heart of current events in the 1930s. Benito Mussolini named his political party (fascists) after the fasces and adopted the symbol as the emblem of his party. The fasces was also adopted as a symbol for the fascist party in a variety of countries by the 1930s. It is likely that contemporary audiences would have been familiar with the emblem when they saw it in this 1934 production.
