Jack Fisk had previously worked on La sottile linea rossa (1998) and The New World - Il nuovo mondo (2005), which were directed by Terrence Malick. The two films were some of the heavy inspirations for this film. Fisk also worked with this film's cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, on the latter film.
