In 1972 Barbara Mullaney (now known as Barbara Knox) was offered the short-term role of Mrs Bates - the mother of a boy taught by Ken Barlow - having previously played exotic dancer Rita Littlewood back in 1964. However, producers quickly spotted Mullaney's potential and thought her character would make a good love interest for Len Fairclough. To facilitate this, writers established that Rita and Mrs Bates were one and the same person, and that Rita was only living with, not married to, Harry Bates, and that the children were his, but not hers. The Bates family were then written out, with Rita still in the show as of 2022.
