8 months before that show was scheduled to appear, Bruce Timm was quoted as wanting the series to "be Fleisher all the way. Not just the Fleisher look, but the early Superman with his Jerry Siegel/Joe Shuster look. I love that look on Superman with the squinty eyes add everything. That would be my take on it". The creative team weren't publicly confident enough on the art direction of the show to make a statement about it as they were still trying to figure out the direction they wanted to take.
