Nearly 20 years after the film's release, Kubrick's personal assistant Leon Vitalli revealed that he received an uncharacteristically warm and reflective personal call from Kubrick the day before his death, and the two of them chatted for an hour. Vitalli went on to emphasize that despite the "shock" of Kubrick's heart attack to those who knew him, he appeared to him extremely fatigued and stressed at the end of post-production.
