Originally, god mode was a cheat available in single-player and FPS (first person shooter) games, which made the player invulnerable, unable to be hurt or killed. It has become an over-used catchall phrase for cheating in a game, and if someone in an online game or MMORPG is caught cheating, they're usually banned for life from that game.
