For the scene in the cave when Darth Vader's mask splits open to reveal Luke's face, a prop head was initially used, but the result was dissatisfying. The scene was re-shot, this time with Mark Hamill's head pushed through a hole behind the mask. Hamill found the scene difficult to shoot, as he had to keep his eyes open without blinking while smoke was blown through the mask.
