In playing the title character of Mr. Jones, actor Richard Gere was drawn to the challenge of portraying an enormous range of emotional extremes and to the almost mystical quality of the character. Gere said: "He is at once powerful and vulnerable, enormously secure, incredibly sensitive, potentially violent. It's a devastating combination. He dazzles the world with energy and fun and charm. His excitement at being alive is overpowering. He is in a place of invincible omniscience. Then he crashes into the darkest caves of his mind."
