Marie Antoinette's marriage had helped establish an alliance between France and Austria. By the early 1790s, this alliance collapsed. In April 1792, France declared war on Austria. Still loyal to the Habsburg cause, Marie Antoinette started passing on French military secrets to the Austrian forces.
