During the sub's first dive (after spotting the Russian trawler) the Captain orders "all ahead flank". Flank speed is the ship's true maximum speed (faster than full speed), but it's not sustainable so it's reserved for emergencies or battle. For example, flank speed may be only 5 knots faster than full speed, but it uses twice the fuel.
