The famous Darth Vader suit was designed by production designer Ralph McQuarrie, who was concerned about the character being able to breathe while he was travelling from his spaceship to Princess Leia's spaceship. It was not explained why Darth Vader wears the suit at all times until L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980). The look of the Darth Vader suit was based on robes worn by Bedouin warriors.
