Spock cites an "Earth ancestor", then proceeds to quote Sherlock Holmes. Elsewhere in the Trek Universe, Holmes is acknowledged as a fictional literary character, so Spock is more likely referring to either Sherlock's creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, or Dr. Joseph Bell, the actual model for Holmes.
