The squad of actors famously went through a grueling week of training with technical advisor Dale Dye prior to filming. This was not a practice without precedent. Before shooting the 1949 classic Bastogne (1949), MGM secured the services of 20 members of the 101st Airborne who had fought in Bastogne, each of those veterans was paired up with an actor to train him in the technical aspects of soldiering. All of the men, actors and soldiers alike, went through a heavily regimented, two week boot camp on the MGM backlot.
