John Stamos was the first choice for the role of James. But the producers of Gli amici di papà (1987) wouldn't let him out of his contract to take the role. Michael Keaton, Mel Gibson, Jeff Goldblum, Griffin Dunne, Nicolas Cage and Kurt Russell were also considered for the role of James.
