During the Academy Award ceremony where the movie was nominated for eight Oscars, director Martin Scorsese was cornered by three FBI agents while he went to the toilet; he had to come in for questioning because the day before, John Hinckley Jr. had tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan after seeing Scorsese's previous movie Taxi Driver (1976) fifteen times (Hinckley had become obsessed with actress Jodie Foster, and claimed that he tried to kill Reagan to impress her). Scorsese asked if he could at least wait to hear who would win Best Picture and Best Director (he was nominated for the latter), but the agents told him "No need, we already asked: they both go to Gente comune (1980)."
