During the lengthy editing process brought on by low test preview scores, Darkman was cut down from roughly two hours to 85 minutes. One of the credited editors, Bud S. Smith completed this version while Sam Raimi went on vacation. After seeing this cut, Danny Elfman threatened to take his name off the movie to support Raimi.Eventually, Universal decided there was nothing that could be done to save the movie and picture locked the cut. At the advice of Bob Murawski, Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Murawski re-edited the entire film over a span of 48 hours, adding back in material they liked which had not tested well. They didn't tell anyone they did this, and Universal executives, who were reportedly furious, did not notice this had been done until after the sound mix had been completed, which was two days before the screenings for critics.
