The movie omits deliberately some parts that it would reveal that Malcolm is dead before the ending twist. In example: Malcolm is seen riding on bus with Cole, but it never is seen how Malcolm pays the ticket; in the anniversary dinner in the restaurant, any waiter closes to Malcolm once he seated with Anna to ask him if he wants to drink or eat something; when Cole comes home, it can be seen Malcolm and Lynn sit down in front each other, but they're not talking and it is not seen how Malcolm got into the house; when Malcolm tries to open the door of his cellar it is always closed and Malcolm removes his pockets looking for the keys, but he never is seen opening the door with the keys; it is not seen how Malcolm hits the crystal of Anna's shop, which is cracked but not broken; Malcolm never is seen eating, drinking, sleeping or touching other people; and the most basics: after Vincent shots him, he never talks other people but Cole (and Anna for the ending twist).
