Author Frank Herbert acknowledged that Lawrence d'Arabia (1962) was an influence behind the novel. The movie was the real-life story of Colonel T.E. Lawrence, the British military officer and writer who went to Saudi Arabia to help the Arabs in the Middle East to organize a revolt against the Turks from 1916 - 1918, and that Paul Atreides bore many similarities to Lawrence. Lawrence was played in Lawrence d'Arabia (1962) by Peter O'Toole, who was married at the time to Siân Phillips who plays the Reverend Mother in Dune.
