In season four, episode seven, X-Files: Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man (1996), Cigarette Smoking Man's real name was revealed to be C.G.B. Spender, with no explanation about the meaning of the first three initials. A possible theory pointed to be Carter Goodwin Bowman Spender, after the last names of Chris Carter, R.W. Goodwin and Rob Bowman, creator and two of the most important producers of the series. However, it has been proven to be untrue after season eleven, episode one, X-Files: My Struggle III (2018), where his entire name was finally divulged: Carl Gerhard Bush Spender.
