Tom Hanks had the chance to work with Morgan Freeman again, but turned down the role of Andy Dufresne in Le ali della libertà (1994). Hanks appeared in another prison-based Stephen King adaptation, Il miglio verde (1999). Like this novel this film is based on, The Green Mile was originally published in serial installments.
