Throughout the movie, there is an underlying theme of butterflies. There are butterfly holes in the stones in the kitchen as Mirabel talks to her mom after Antonio's ceremony. Mirabel wears a shirt embroidered with butterflies, including a pink butterfly in her shoulder. Abuelo Pedro's portrait has yellow butterflies in the background. Abuela has butterflies on the bottom of her dress. When Mirabel is with Bruno as he has a new vision about her, one of the images he predicts is a butterfly landing on a plant. And if you have closed captioning on to translate the songs towards the end of the movie, the lyrics translate to a story about caterpillars turning into butterflies.
