The entire movie is shown to be a flashback after the opening sequence with Red XIII and his children visiting the ruins of Midgar almost 500 years after the events of the movie. Since there are no humans around and Midgar is overgrown with vegetation, it could easily be said that despite Rufus Shinra's speech to Kadaj that Humanity will endure, the human race on the planet Earth was wiped out by a future calamity.
