Sir Ridley Scott initially wanted Max von Sydow for the role of elderly Peter Weyland. However, Scott and Damon Lindelof later conceived of a scene in which David the android (Michael Fassbender) would interface with Weyland while in hypersleep, and see Weyland dreaming of himself as a younger man, since he is obsessed with immortality. In the dream, Weyland was a handsome playboy on a luxury yacht, surrounded by sexy women, jet-skis and sportscars. The sequence was storyboarded, designed and set to be shot in Alicante, Spain, but Scott decided against it as to not spoil the surprise of old Weyland being on board the Prometheus all the time. Since the scene was cut late in production and never filmed, Guy Pearce had already been cast in the role, and thus underwent extensive make-up to appear elderly. Fortunately, Pearce was also allowed to appear as the younger Peter Weyland in The Peter Weyland Files: TED Conference, 2023 (2012), giving a TED Talk in one of the promotional clips for the movie. A longer version of this clip is available as a bonus feature on the home theater edition. Pierce would later also make a brief appearance as the younger Weyland in Alien: Covenant (2017).
