Joseph Bolonga, mostly known as a theater actor, was originally in Walter Matthau's part before dropping out... his being cast in a lead role was most likely from his scene-stealing performance in the previous years' hit comedy My Favorite Year. He would instead go on to co-star in Blame it on Rio and The Woman in Red.
