This movie states that it was Darkseid who created the Doomsday monster and sent it to Earth when in the original comic book story line the monster had no origin written. In 1991, when the DC comic writers were first coming up with the villain that would eventually kill Superman, they immediately decided that giving the kill to one of Superman's classic foes (whether directly or indirectly) would seem too out of place and cheap. Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Metallo, Bizarro, and even Batman were all considered. But each writer agreed that no one would believe in Superman's permanent death since these villains had been fighting him for so many years already and hadn't have been able to kill him in all that time (apart from random stories that had to do with pranks, incorrect identities, and happenstance tales). And so, Doomsday was newly created to be the ultimate being with no backstory, no reason, no weaknesses, and no history to have to explain in exposition. Eventually future comics would define the Doomsday monster with an origin to explain his strength and specific hatred for Superman. But during the entire Death and Return of Superman comic book saga, he existed as an anomaly of unknown origins.
