Mike Nichols worked hard to learn on the set and become the best movie director he could be. "Every day Mike would learn more than some directors learn in years of shooting", said cinematographer Haskell Wexler. Nichols was open to suggestions from the more experienced crew and came to rely on editor Sam O'Steen's input when determining how each scene should be shot and put together.
