According to director Noriyaki Abe, the anime ended before adapting Bleach's final manga arc, the Thousand-Year Blood War, because the anime was too close to the manga that they had to ask Tite Kubo, mangaka of Bleach, for what would happen next. The production of episodes starts months in advance according to him, and at the time the anime ended, the manga was only 4 chapters ahead, which wasn't enough to start a new anime season.
