Michael Herr and Stanley Kubrick were contemplating a collaboration on the Holocaust but couldn't find the right material. Then Kubrick came across the galleys of Gustav Hasford's "The Short-Timers". Herr, a Vietnam vet himself, thought it was a masterpiece.
