Frodo and Sam's journey through Mordor to Mount Doom only takes up three chapters in the book The Return of the King. Their other scenes together, up to and including the fight with Shelob and Frodo's capture by the Orcs, actually takes place in the book The Two Towers. The second half of that book, however, is devoted entirely to Frodo and Sam. The adventures of the other remaining members of the Fellowship are told in the first half of that book, and their story is picked up again at the first half of The Return of the King, which doesn't resume Frodo and Sam's story until its second half. Many of the chapters devoted to Frodo and Sam at the end of The Two Towers actually correspond not to chapters from the first half of that book, but the first half of The Return of the King. Therefore, many of those scenes were shifted to the script for The Return of the King, both to keep the time lines more accurate, and to give more screen time to Frodo and Sam.
