Ian Ziering had moved back to his home state of New Jersey upon receiving phone call about the series. When he read the script, he thought it was very superficial, to which he was right. The pilot was all about the glitz and the glamour of Beverly Hills, the obnoxious kids, and the fish-out-of-water story of Brenda and Brandon Walsh. He couldn't discern from that first script that the show would become very issue-oriented.
