This film is an American remake of a french comedy movie: Le Diner de Cons (1998) by Francis Veber. Some of the bigger differences include: In the original, all the action takes place within Tim's (called Pierre in the French version) apartment. Barry (called François in the French version) creates monuments with matchsticks. Paul Rudd's character isn't just a good guy unluckily stuck with the schmuck that ends up ruining his life, he is meant to be an unlikable jerk who regularly hosts the dinners with his friends. Darla's French equivalent is invited to the appartment by Barry because her last name phonetically sounds like the word Sister which Barry interprets as her being Tim's sister.
