Alejandro G. Iñárritu won his second Academy Award for Best Director for this film, his first having been for Birdman o (L'imprevedibile virtù dell'ignoranza) (2014) the previous year. This made him the first director since Joseph L. Mankiewicz (in 1949 and 1950) to win the award in consecutive years.
