In the film, Charlie receives the highly prestigious MacArthur "Genius Grant." Writer/Director Noah Baumbach's sister-in-law Annie Baker is a real-life recipient of this award, being named a MacArthur fellow in 2017, when this film was already in production. Matthew Maher (Theater Actor) was in the original cast of Baker's play "The Flick"; that production, at New York's Playwright's Horizons, was closed by the time "The Flick" won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
