The character of Dan Tashtego is inspired by the character: Tashtego, a whale harpooner of African descent in the literary novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. Previously in Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003) Victor Salva had already made a free adaptation of Moby-Dick with the characters of Jack Taggart and Jackie Taggart inspired by Captain Ahab and Queequeg.
