Early in the first season it became clear they were falling behind schedule. To be able to provide new episodes weekly a second lead, Bart Maverick, was added. Two units concurrently filmed Bret episodes and Bart episodes plus the occasional one featuring both. With different combinations of brothers this production model was used for the first four seasons.
