The only film in the franchise where the villain/antagonist (namely, Edgar the bug) works alone. In the next two movies, the villain had minions. This is also the only film with Laurel, the medical examiner, even though she is recruited as J's partner at the end. Although, she is briefly mentioned in the second film.
