John Singleton's original idea for Poetic Justice was to do an army film because he was upset that a friend of his was sent to fight in the Persian Gulf. It was going to be about a young GI's wife named Justice who would marry a guy who was recruited from South Central Los Angeles and then would go off to live on an army base in Japan, or the Philippines, or Northwest. The man would spend all his money on his truck and not on supporting his family, he would eventually get mad at one of his CEOs and end up punching him out which gets him sent to jail. Justice would send him poems while he's locked up, she'd have many babies but with no money. The idea of Justice working at a hair salon came from her originally doing the hair of other army wives for extra money. John Singleton ended up giving up on the army idea since he'd have to do extensive research on living on an army base.
