The TV series removed the more controversial elements of the movie. Among other changes, Leroy no longer had difficulty reading. Miss Sherwood was no longer racist. Mr. Shorofsky no longer swore at his students. No one mentioned Coco being asked to pose nude. Ralph Garcy was not homophobic, he didn't have a substance abuse problem, and his sister was not assaulted. Montgomery McNeil was not gay. Lydia did not have a crush on Leroy. No one had an abortion.
