The distribution rights were purchased by United Artists prior to the company being purchased by MGM. The management at MGM had no faith in the film, did little to promote it (leaving the production company Aurora to put up the marketing costs), and was only given a quasi-limited release. Not helping the film's chance for success was that it was released during a crowded summer led by E.T. - L'extra-terrestre (1982). Although the film performed well in the theaters that played it, the film was unable to break even until it was released on video.
