Rose McGowan and the writers of the film discussed on ways to portray the witch Marique as suffering from "Electra complex", a girl's psychosexual competition with her mother for possession of her father. The production studio rejected much of the necessary dialogue to depict the problem, but McGowan decided to keep implying it in Marique's interactions with her father.
