This is the first Star Wars movie to show a lightsaber combat something other than another lightsaber. Luke fights guards with staffs and blasters on the sail barge. In Guerre stellari (1977) and L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980), a lightsaber is seen only fighting another lightsaber. It should be noted that Obi-Wan Kenobi's removal of Ponda Baba's arm does not count as a fight, but could be considered a combat between a lightsaber and another weapon.
